Ever feel stuck when planning for a session? So often I have clients email me photos of their children’s outfits, and one is usually classic/preppy and the other is more on the edgy side. Guess which one I pick?

Both!

Another wonderful thing about custom photography sessions is flexibility- bring a few outfits!

Q: Caitlin, what should my newborn wear during her session?

A: I get asked this question all the time and the answer is quite simple- nothing! Okay, you can keep her in a diaper and blanket until I arrive, but beyond that, try not to get caught up in planning elaborate outfits because it will just overwhelm her and take away from her squishiness! I will bring wraps, swaddles, and cocoons, but aside from that, you could look for headbands or hats to have your child wear.

Did you know American Eagle now has an infant-toddler-kid line!? EEEEP! I love it!

This stuff is ridiculously awesome.  Look for future posts with their baby and toddler clothing, but this week- the ‘tweens are up!

Preppy is good. I love preppy. I actually actively discourage graphic tees for family sessions, BUT – there is a time and place!  Bring a change of clothes, allow your son to bring his skateboard, your daughter to bring her ipod, whatever reflects their tweenerific personality these days.  Let’s get funky and cool- without using those words, I have a feeling if we do, your children will run for the hills;)

More etsy love this week. I often get emails from clients who are distraught over little boy wardrobe choices for their family shoot. What about spicing it up a bit? These ties are INSANELY cute and would rock any baby or toddler session!!! There are tons of vendors out there, but this one in particular caught my eye.

Have you heard of Etsy???  I have been addicted to it since I was pregnant with Ava last year. It’s just an endless source of amazingness (yup I said that).  If you are planning for your upcoming newborn session~ email me! I now own four different colored cocoons, three diaper covers, several headbands, some hats, and more! If you want to buy something special for your session, you are more than welcome to, but you can always raid my stash if you instead!

Do you see a trend here? I am a sucker for preppy boys and sweet little girls in sundresses. I also love Baby Gap and the way they incorporate the current trends into their baby clothing.  I wouldn’t suggest a hat for an entire photography session, but it would be cute to snag a few shots rockin’ the one below!  Classic and cute!

These simple summer outfits are from Target.  They would be perfect for mom and dad to sport at the family photography session OR for a romantic engagement session! Picture yourself wearing these at a cute outdoor cafe, at Boat House Row, or strolling the streets of Old City!

Ooh so pretty, sweet, and summery! These outfits are from Abercrombie Kids and scream summer-fun-in-the-sun!  I am pretty sure you could convince any fashion-conscious ‘tween to sport these outfits.  They are trendy without being inappropriate which can be very hard to find these days.  What do you think?
