Leaping into a New Year
How is it almost 2015? Was 2014 a good year for you? My guess is that it had a lot of great moments, but very possibly, it included some moments that broke your heart or made you question your path in life. What is on your bucket list this year? How will you get there? If working in special education taught me one thing, it’s to have a goal and include how you will get there.
We also learned to phrase goals positively:
ie: Caitlin will demonstrate appropriate play skills at preschool, which include asking a friend to share, taking two turns, and keeping her hands on her body.
Caitlin will stop taking her friends toys, and will not bite them anymore.
The thought process is, let’s focus on the end goal instead of perseverating on the negative that is happening.
With that, the goals always required steps to get to the goal’s end result:
Caitlin will play back-and-forth games with special instructor who will model turn-taking skills.
Special Instructor will model social skills during structured play.
Special Instructor will facilitate back-and-forth play between Caitlin and her peers.
A functional behavior assessment will be completed by Special Instructor to determine why Caitlin is biting.
A speech evaluation will be completed to determine whether Caitlin is biting due needing more support with expressive language.
You catch my drift?
What does that have to do with you?
I want to challenge you to come up with five goals for 2015.
Think about how you will get there.
Write them down. View them daily. Check in, keep track, and hold yourself accountable.
Let me know how you are doing with them! Remember, Rome was not built in a day, so be kind to yourself and allow yourself to accomplish baby steps along the way, and be proud when you tackle a baby step!
Happy-almost-2015. I hope it rocks!
