Welcome to Monday Musings by Caitlin Domanico!
Monday Musings * The Highlight Reel of Social Media
If you know me in “real” life, you know I am a very positive person. I am just wired that way. I love being that way. In that same respect, I don’t like to air dirty laundry on-line, I just feel like it’s too public, too available to anyone, and not just friends and family. And that kind of freaks me out!
I once heard someone say that being on facebook can be like watching people’s highlight reel. If they are like me, they chose to keep their posts and photos uplifting, light-hearted, or funny 95% of the time.
It can be very easy to look at someone’s blog or facebook page and judge them, or judge yourself, “Wow, they have such a great marriage, she is such a good mom, she eats wayyyy better than me, etc”. Have you ever thought that? I know I have! In times when I find myself comparing my life with their “social media” life, I remind myself to close the computer, turn off the phone and enjoy the blessings I have in front of me, instead of trying to analyze something that I do not have full information on! This can work the opposite way, too- ever have a friend that is just completely negative? Every post is them ranting and complaining, maybe seeking attention? Those can be tough, too, and I have learned to click “hide” on on-line acquaintances that do anything other than lift me up, inspire me, or make me laugh!
What is your take on this?
